Stand with Máxima!
Demand Newmont drop its lawsuits and stop all harassment of Máxima and her family!
Peruvian farmer and land defender Máxima Acuña de Chaupe is facing two civil lawsuits filed by Denver-based Newmont Mining’s Peruvian subsidiary, Yanacocha.
As portrayed in the documentary MAXIMA, these lawsuits are the latest attempt to strip Máxima of her land, Tragadero Grande, in order to build an open-pit gold mine (“Conga”) that would destroy her way of life.
Máxima has long stood up for her right to peacefully live off her own property—and won the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2016 for her successful efforts to keep Newmont at bay. She also beat Newmont in court in 2017, when she was acquitted on unfounded charges of aggravated usurpation of Tragadero Grande. But the fight isn’t over. Máxima and her family are still facing harassment at the hands of the Peruvian National Police, which have historically provided security services to Newmont and other mining companies in Peru.
At the same time, Newmont is still trying to build the Conga gold mine. As the latest round of lawsuits drag on, it is more important than ever to stand in solidarity with Máxima and her family, and to tell Newmont to cancel the Conga mine once and for all. Newmont must respect the United Nations’ proposed guidelines regarding human rights and transnational corporations, and cease all harassment against Máxima!

Support Maxima’s GoFundMe Campaign
We have created an online fundraising campaign via GoFundMe to raise funds for Máxima’s civil case in Peru – which can take up to ten years - and her living expenses while her case is ongoing.
As portrayed in the film, Máxima’s livelihood has been greatly affected by the land dispute since 2011. In addition to having mounting legal expenses related to the civil case, her ability to grow crops, raise farm animals and make handmade goods has been compromised.
Your donation will help Máxima cover legal expenses (including travel to court hearings) as well as living expenses while her fight is ongoing. All funds will go directly to Maxima and her family.
