MAXIMA shows the personal journey of an indigenous woman, who cannot read or write, in her fight to protect human rights and the environment from massive corporate destruction.
The film follows Peruvian farmer Máxima Acuña as she stands up to the largest gold producer in the world: US-based Newmont Mining Corporation.
Throughout Máxima’s fight for justice, we reveal the mechanics of how a transnational corporation manages to get away with human rights and environmental crimes, The World’s Bank role in this, and the resilience of one woman who refuses to back down.

“ Máxima’s land dispute is a case about human rights — a citizen’s fight against economic power.”
HOW TO
USE THE FILM
We’ve launched an international campaign to bring our film to communities across the world—catalyzing important conversations about human rights, the environment and corporate accountability.
In times when our government is stripping away the rights of the people, creating policies that favor corporations over its citizens, and failing to protect the environment, our documentary is a much needed reminder that we the people have the power to make a difference.
Many have found our film to be a powerful portrayal of the environmental and human impact of mining, but also a powerful tool to share a message of leadership, empowerment, and hope.

“Máxima is a symbol for the battle for human rights.”
THE FILM
MAXIMA is a powerful, critically acclaimed documentary that portrays the fight of an individual against an economic power.
If Máxima Acuña, a Peruvian farmer from the Andes who cannot read or write, can stand in the way of a multi-billion-dollar mining company, why can’t we all stand up for our rights and protect what is important to us? The film is a true testament to women’s leadership and empowerment.

“They don’t want the land, they want the gold. Their greed is going to pollute our lakes.”
THE EXPERTS

“A future without clean water is unbearable. It’s a matter of life and death.”

HOW TO HELP
GoFundMe Campaign!
We have created an online fundraising campaign via GoFundMe to raise funds for Máxima’s civil case in Peru – which can take up to ten years - and her living expenses while her case is ongoing.
As portrayed in the film, Máxima’s livelihood has been greatly affected by the land dispute since 2011. In addition to having mounting legal expenses related to the civil case, her ability to grow crops, raise farm animals and make handmade goods has been compromised.
Your donation will help Máxima cover legal expenses (including travel to court hearings) as well as living expenses while her fight is ongoing. All funds will go directly to Maxima and her family.
